Initial Environmental Review (IER) is composed by an exhaustive analysis of the problems, impacts and environmental performances relevant to an organisation’s activity. IER is generally required both by the UNI EN ISO 14001 standard and by the EMAS European regulation.

Environmental Review allows an organization to:

1. Identify legal provisions applicable to its activities;
2. Identify all the environmental aspects which have a significant environmental impact;
3. Define suitable criteria in order to assess its environmental impacts;
4. Examine all the existing environmental management practices and procedures ;
5. Evaluate the results from the analysis of previous environmental accidents and emergencies.

Initial environmental review is the tool to enable the organisation to:

1. Acquire full, deep and documented knowledge on the environmental aspects relevant to its activities, products and services.
2. Identify the most significant environmental aspects and the Environmental Performance Indices with which to evaluate the environmental performance.

Based on this information, an organisation can establish an Environmental Policy and set objectives and targets towards improvement
